Every now and then even medical school requires a dose of balance! Amidst mastering essential suturing skills, anatomy quizzes and enduring long theatrical hours, students often overlook the value of taking a step back and enjoying relaxation and friendship. With this in mind the Wits Surgical Society hosted its highly anticipated Pubcrawl Pregames - Beer Pong Tournament on the 29th of March 2025 at Beer Park Sandton.
From the moment we walked in the atmosphere was electric and full of anticipation as everyone was geared for a competitive night. What started as a friendly competition soon turned into a spectacle night of remarkable energy, participants showcasing trick shots, dramatic celebrations and humble banter across the tables between teams. And ofcourse, in a true surgical society fashion everything was meticulously organised- from projected score board that tracked team progress through the rounds to careful supervision of the rules for fairness and structure.
Between games, attendees and students from different years had the opportunity to mingle over snacks and beverages while sharing their experiences, academic advice and laughter.
The final game was the highlight of the evening which was truly a celebration of teamwork and resilience with “The Costco Guys” securing their place as champions of the beer pong tournament. Their win was celebrated by peers with genuine enthusiasm, rounding off the competition on a high note.

The success of the evening is dedicated to the Wits Surgical Society Committee along with the support of Beer Park Sandton and the enthusiastic participation of students, for creating such a memorable evening. Not only did they deliver such a smoothly run event, but they also raised funds to support upcoming academic initiatives, including workshops, surgical skill sessions, and guest lectures. It is this balance, lighthearted social events paired with meaningful academic opportunities and supportive students that continuously defines the
strength and vitality of the society.
As the event drew to a close, students left with smiles on their faces, stories to retell, and strong connections within the surgical community. The Surgical Society Beer Pong Night was more than just an evening of games, it was proof that even the most serious of future surgeons and doctors can set aside their textbooks and embrace the joy of the community. Truly it was a night marked by incredibly steady hands, sharp minds, and precison brought to beer pong shots just like the operating table.
